Idris Elba and the Stellar Development Foundation announced the launch of Akuna Wallet, a blockchain-based payment solution specifically designed for the African creator economy. The wallet addresses a critical bottleneck where talented creators across West Africa cannot monetize their work due to lack of access to traditional banking infrastructure. Built on Stellar's tech stack, Akuna Wallet enables creators to receive payments in USDC and convert to local currency through partnerships with Chipper Cash and Bridge. The pilot launches in Ghana, with plans to expand across West Africa. Elba envisions the long-term vision as the Akunaverse, a comprehensive ecosystem for African creators that includes funding, copyright protection, insurance, royalty collection, and digital distribution. The Bank of Ghana has shown strong support for the initiative, with the central bank's governor and staff backing the project.
