Open Protocol Discussion (06/09/22)

Stellar protocol upgraded to version 19 with new transaction preconditions and signer types. The ecosystem discussed CAP 54, a comprehensive asset interoperability proposal for Jump Cannon smart contracts that enables classic Stellar assets to interoperate with smart contract tokens through a native token implementation with wrapping/unwrapping capabilities.

Lumen Loop's take

Stellar successfully upgraded to protocol 19, introducing new transaction preconditions and signer types that enable payment channels, bridges, and key recovery services. The core development team discussed three competing proposals (CAP 48, 49, 54) for asset interoperability between classic Stellar and Jump Cannon smart contracts. CAP 54, the most comprehensive approach, proposes a native token contract that handles both asset interop and provides a general-purpose token standard. Key features include support for multiple authorization types (ED25519 keys, contracts, Stellar accounts with multisig), an admin interface for supply control and freezing, and wrapper functions to move assets between classic and smart contract environments. The team also discussed unifying host function invocations into a single operation type rather than creating separate operations for each function.
