What We've Built and Where We're Headed: Scaling Stellar Core for the Future | Meridian 2025

Marta from Stellar Core team discusses 2025 scalability achievements, including background transaction processing, parallel Soroban execution, and theoretical throughput nearly doubling to over 2400 TPS. The team is experimenting with consensus-execution pipelining to further increase throughput while maintaining latency.

Lumen Loop's take

Stellar Core engineer Marta presents the team's scalability progress and roadmap. Key achievements in 2025 include rolling out background transaction dissemination to mainnet, introducing background block execution, and supporting parallel Soroban execution on mainnet. The team has published theoretical throughput results openly with methodology and reproducibility steps. Version 22.3.0 nearly doubled throughput, with version 23.1.0 showing preliminary results exceeding 2400 TPS. The team is now experimenting with pipelining consensus and execution stages, similar to CPU instruction pipelining, which could increase throughput by 77% while keeping end-to-end latency unchanged. The 2.5-second block time target remains achievable with both stages running under that threshold.
