The Road to 5000 TPS: Scaling Stellar in 2025

SDF plans to scale Stellar Core to 5000 TPS in 2025 through Protocol 23, parallel execution, decoupled consensus, aggressive caching, and improved benchmarking. These upgrades enable Soroban to handle higher transaction volumes without requiring node operators to upgrade hardware.

The Stellar Development Foundation outlined its 2025 scalability roadmap targeting 5000 transactions per second for Stellar Core. Key initiatives include Protocol 23 with multi-threaded smart contract execution and WebAssembly caching, increased parallelism in background processing, decoupling consensus from execution to eliminate idle time, aggressive in-memory caching for state loads, and refined benchmarking frameworks. These improvements leverage existing validator infrastructure without imposing new hardware requirements. The upgrades enable Soroban to support new use cases while maintaining fast confirmation times and low costs, with downstream systems like Horizon and Stellar RPC also needing to scale accordingly.
