Stellar DeFi Security Standards and Best Practices

SDF publishes security standards for Stellar DeFi protocols, defining audit, disclosure, risk management, and governance requirements as the ecosystem scales from experimental to production. The standards include audits before user funds, bug bounties, capital buffers, and emergency pause controls, reflecting practices mature DeFi teams already use elsewhere, adapted for Stellar.

Lumen Loop's take

SDF has published security and operational standards for Stellar DeFi protocols, reflecting an ecosystem moving beyond experimental phase. With hundreds of millions in user funds locked across protocols and increasing interconnection between them, SDF is setting explicit expectations: third-party audits before accepting material user funds, published vulnerability disclosure policies with meaningful bug bounties, security postures and vendor risk management scaled to assets under management, stress testing of economic parameters under adverse conditions, and capital buffer reserves of approximately 5 percent of total liabilities. The standards codify practices already common among mature DeFi teams on other blockchains. By publishing them, SDF makes explicit what responsible DeFi on Stellar should look like: audits before launch, multisig governance and emergency pause mechanisms as standard, oracle manipulation and liquidation failures modeled in advance. The ecosystem benefits when expectations are clear rather than assumed.
