Lumen Loop's take

Stellar co-founder Jed McCaleb announced the formation of Lightyear.io, a for-profit enterprise designed to help financial institutions adopt Stellar's open-source payments network. The company will enable seamless currency exchange and low-cost financial services by connecting banks, remittance companies, payment platforms, and mobile money systems. McCaleb explained that while Stellar started by targeting microfinance institutions in developing markets, larger financial institutions are necessary to scale the network. Lightyear operates separately from the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation, similar to how Red Hat commercializes Linux. The move reflects a broader fintech trend where disruptors pivot to partnering with incumbents rather than replacing them.
