Stellar Development Foundation delayed its Protocol 20 upgrade beyond Jan. 30 after discovering a bug in Soroban smart contracts software. Six of seven tier-1 validators signaled support for postponement, likely preventing the upgrade from reaching quorum.

The Stellar Development Foundation identified a bug in Stellar Core v20.1.0 on Jan. 25 that could affect Soroban smart contract transactions. Though initially deemed low-risk, robust feedback from the developer community prompted SDF to recommend delaying the Protocol 20 upgrade beyond its Jan. 30 target date. Six of seven tier-1 validators, including SDF, Satoshipay, Blockdaemon, Public Node, Lobstr, and Whalestack, communicated plans to disarm and prevent the upgrade vote. With less than five organizations voting for the upgrade, it will lack sufficient quorum. A bug fix is expected within two weeks, after which SDF will coordinate a new vote date.
