Stellar.org announced a second lumen distribution program offering 16 billion lumens (16% of initial supply) to bitcoin holders, with claims opening June 27, 2017. The giveaway reflects Bitcoin's influence on Stellar's design and aims to build community ownership of the network.

Stellar.org launched its second lumen giveaway program, distributing 16 billion lumens to bitcoin holders on a pro-rata basis starting June 27, 2017. The snapshot of bitcoin balances was taken on June 26, 2017, and eligible holders can claim lumens by verifying their bitcoin address ownership through Facebook authentication or participating exchanges like Kraken and Poloniex. The program also includes a separate allocation of 1 billion lumens for XRP holders, who can either claim pro-rata distributions or donate their XRP to charities for equivalent lumens. Stellar emphasized that Bitcoin inspired its design philosophy, and the giveaway reflects the foundation's commitment to community-based network ownership. Unclaimed lumens after August 27, 2017 will go to Stellar.org's operational fund and Build Challenge.
