The Stellar Development Foundation held a public auction of stellars on the Stellar internal distributed exchange through Haste.co.nz, a New Zealand-registered Financial Services Provider. The foundation placed 650 million stellars at the 30-day trailing average price of $0.0031 USD/STR, with proceeds designated for operating expenses. In April 2015, SDF expanded the auction to accept Bitcoin via Poloniex and Kraken exchanges, calculating BTC prices to maintain parity with the USD auction price. Participants could obtain Haste USD credits through wire transfers, internal exchange trading, or Bitstamp USD for amounts over $1000. The auction process was transparent and conducted on the Stellar distributed exchange, with no SDF employees, consultants, or board members participating.
