Stellar Aid Assist: A year of impact and innovation

Stellar Aid Assist, launched one year ago in Ukraine with UNHCR, has successfully disbursed $1.1 million in aid to over 1,500 internally displaced people. The initiative's success led to the development and open-sourcing of the Stellar Disbursement Platform, enabling bulk payments across borders for governments, organizations, and companies.

Lumen Loop's take

One year after its launch in Ukraine under UNHCR, Stellar Aid Assist has demonstrated the viability of blockchain-based aid delivery by disbursing $1.1 million to over 1,500 internally displaced people for basic needs, rent, and gender-based violence support. The rapid development from concept to MVP in under two months, achieved through partnerships with Circle, Moneygram International, and Vesseo, showcased the power of the Stellar ecosystem. The platform's success catalyzed the creation of the Stellar Disbursement Platform, which was open-sourced in August 2023 to enable organizations, governments, and companies to facilitate bulk payments more cheaply and transparently than legacy systems. The SDP has already facilitated payments globally from the Gambia to Mexico, serving underserved populations without access to traditional banking while maintaining regulatory compliance.
